UCSI-IISDS Hosts Science Diplomacy Workshop with the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) – Malaysia

On the 20th– 22nd September 2025, the International Institute of Science Diplomacy and Sustainability (UCSI-IISDS), founded by the Patron of INGSA-Asia, Tan Sri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid, in collaboration with the Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR), organized a 3-day workshop on Science Diplomacy designed to equip young, up-and-coming Malaysian diplomats with the essential knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the increasingly complex landscape of global diplomatic relations, particularly within the ASEAN region.

The workshop featured a series of lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions led by distinguished experts in the fields of diplomacy, environmental science and international relations. Key topics highlighted were:-

  • Science Advice to Governments: The critical role of scientific expertise in shaping effective public policy
  • Introduction to Science Diplomacy: Understanding the role of science diplomacy and its growing importance in global policy-making
  • The 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Exploring the integration of environmental, social and governance factors in international agreements
  • Challenges in Global Environmental Diplomacy: Focused on negotiating treaties related to biodiversity, climate change, and plastic pollution

As part of the workshop, Tan Sri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid delivered lectures and case study discussions focusing on science diplomacy and Fukushima Reactor Water. Prof Ts Dr Tan Wee Hoe, the chair of INGSA-Asia also delivered a lecture on Science Advice to Governments to the participants, which offered valuable insights into the intersection of science, policy, and education, particularly within the ASEAN context.
