Alphonse Nkurunziza is an International Transport Planning Engineer and an Urban Planner with more than 17 years of experience in research and practice. Alphonse is currently the Director of African Centre of Excellence in Transport and Logistics at the College of Science and Technology of the University of Rwanda. He is also a Senior Lecturer of Urban Structure, Transport Planning and Engineering in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering. Previously, he served as the Director General for Urban Planning and Infrastructure Development [City Engineer] in the City of Kigali from 2013 to 2018.

He holds a Ph.D. in Transport Planning & Engineering from the University of Twente, The Netherlands obtained in 2013 and a Master of Science Degree in Urban Planning and Management from the same university.
